Veterinary Nursing

The Heart of Our Practice: Veterinary Nurses

Veterinary nurses are the absolute backbone of any veterinary practice, and at The Brook, our nursing team is truly the heart of everything we do. They’re skilled professionals who play a crucial role in every aspect of your pet’s care – and we couldn’t do what we do without them.

What Veterinary Nurses Do

Far more than assistants, veterinary nurses are highly trained professionals with their own areas of expertise. Our nurses monitor pets under anaesthesia, provide emergency first aid, run diagnostic tests, manage patient care and recovery, perform dental procedures, offer nutritional and behavioural advice, run specialized clinics including weight management and dental health, provide compassionate support to worried pet owners, and so much more. They’re often the first friendly face you’ll see when you arrive and the caring voice on the phone when you call with concerns.

Why Nursing is Such a Rewarding Career

If you love animals and want to make a real difference to their lives, veterinary nursing could be the perfect career for you. It’s challenging, varied, and incredibly fulfilling. No two days are the same, and you’ll develop a wide range of clinical and technical skills while building meaningful relationships with pets and their families.

How to Become a Veterinary Nurse

There are several pathways into veterinary nursing:

  • Apprenticeship Route – The most common pathway is a Level 3 Veterinary Nurse apprenticeship, which combines hands-on workplace training with college study. You’ll work in practice while learning, gaining real experience from day one. The apprenticeship typically takes around two years to complete.
  • Degree Route – You can also study for a degree in Veterinary Nursing at university, which includes practical placements in veterinary practices alongside academic learning.
  • What You’ll Need – A genuine passion for animal welfare, good communication skills, the ability to stay calm under pressure, teamwork and empathy, and GCSEs including English, Maths, and Science (requirements vary by course/apprenticeship).
Training at The Brook

We’re proud to be an approved training practice for veterinary nurse apprentices. If you’re interested in starting your nursing career with us, we’d love to hear from you! Veterinary nursing is more than a job; it’s a vocation. If you’re ready to embark on a career where every day brings new challenges, learning opportunities, and the chance to help animals in need, we’d be delighted to support your journey.
